SXS Sports Racing Round 1 Race Report
Pataskala, OH (3/9/2019) – Can-Am / PPEI’s Kyle Chaney drove a borrowed Can-Am Maverick X3 to victory during the Arctic Derby Dash in Eagle River, WI. The event was held at the World Championship Derby Complex and was the opening round of the SXS Sports Racing Series.
Chaney led from the pole in the Le Mans-style start and held the lead through two caution periods to secure the victory. Interestingly, Chaney hadn’t originally planned to compete in the event, so he borrowed a car from Action Off Road’s Jason Stewart. The CT Race WORX short course car hadn’t even seen the track, but Chaney broke it during practice and quickly set the fastest time.
“It was brand new and had never even been driven,” explained Chaney. “I broke it in during practice. The car was on rails and we had the fastest car in practice. I started on the pole and got an early lead. I picked good lines and held it up the halfway caution. We had another caution with four laps to go, but I stayed up front.”
While temperatures held below freezing during practice, on race day the weather had other plans. With temperatures climbing into the 40s, the ice track turned to slush, and it took all of Chaney’s driving skill to keep it on track.
“At race time, the ice was melting,” said Chaney. “The track was really good for the conditions they had, but there were big water holes. It was a track where you could make a lot of mistakes. It was very technical.”
Chaney was running Maxxis Ceros tires mounted on Metal FX wheels. To cope with the ice the tires were studded with Kold Kutter screws. It was a winning combination as he had sure footed grip throughout the course.
“It was a great combination of tires and wheels,” said Chaney. “They hooked up everywhere, which was important considering the conditions and the technical nature of the track.”
Chaney plans to race next at TexPlex Park in Midlothian, TX on April 4th before making his way to the WORCS race the following weekend.
